Ramadan is the most special month in the Islamic calendar. It is not merely a month of abstaining from hunger and thirst, but a month for soul cultivation, strengthening of faith, and an opportunity to draw closer to Allah SWT. Every day in Ramadan is filled with mercy, forgiveness, and multiplied rewards.

Why is Ramadan So Special?

Ramadan is the month in which the Quran was revealed as a guide for all mankind. During this month, the gates of heaven are opened, the gates of hell are closed, and the devils are chained. Every good deed is rewarded far more generously than in other months.

The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) stated that the beginning of Ramadan is mercy, its middle is forgiveness, and its end is liberation from the fires of hell.

Special Days in Ramadan

  • The Beginning – Month of Mercy
The early days are a time to adjust to fasting and renew intentions. It is a phase for building discipline and sincerity.

  • The Last 10 Nights – Nights of Forgiveness
It is highly encouraged to enliven these nights with worship. The Prophet (SAW) increased his night prayers (qiyamullail), supplications, and seclusion in the mosque (iktikaf) during this period.

  • Laylatul Qadr
A night better than a thousand months. Its exact date is hidden so that Muslims continue to strive in worship throughout the final ten nights. On this night, prayers are answered and Allah's mercy descends with full blessings.

Encouraged Practices

  • Fasting with Full Faith
Fasting is not just about refraining from eating and drinking; it also involves guarding one's tongue, gaze, and conduct from vain or useless matters.

  • Reading and Reflecting upon the Quran
Ramadan is the month of the Quran. Reading, understanding, and internalizing the holy verses of the Quran are primary practices that are highly recommended.

  • Sunnah Prayers and Qiyamullail
Tarawih, Witir, and Tahajud prayers help to purify the heart and bring oneself closer to Allah SWT.

  • Giving Charity and Helping Others
Charity during the month of Ramadan is highly encouraged as its rewards are multiplied. It also serves as a medium to lighten the burden of those in need.

  • Increasing Supplication (Doa) and Remembrance (Zikir)
Ramadan is the best time to supplicate and seek forgiveness, guidance, and blessings in life.

Ramadan as a Month of Change

Ramadan educates Muslims to become individuals who are more patient, generous, and responsible. It is not merely a seasonal act of worship, but a spiritual training to shape better character and a better lifestyle throughout the year.

May this Ramadan be a turning point for all of us in improving our relationship with Allah, with fellow human beings, and with ourselves.
